I got a Job!

'twas a Perfect Afternoon

Me with a giant smile giving two thumbs up for office-culture-day.

After applying places for months and months, I've gotten hired at a company called Perfect Afternoon. They're a WordPress agency based in Detroit, Michigan.

I love who I work with. I love my schedule. There are some things about WordPress that are frustrating, but it isn't that bad.

I'm No Longer an Anti-WorpPress Snob

I used to be very Anti-WordPress... because of the negatives.

  • Performance-optimization is tough. It requires a lot of complexity that makes maintenence a major cost.
  • Because of the general engineering of WordPress, it is natural for it to become spaghettified. It's like a big pile of code.
  • The reliance on 3rd-party code puts you at the mercy of developers and codebase-managment decisions that can be less-than-ideal.

The Possitives of WordPress

  • Extensibility: WordPress is extremely flexible. The hook architecture makes
  • Ecosystem: WordPress has a rich ecosystem of plugins ready to be utilized: solutions for common problems. This can really expedite development by not having to reinvent the wheel.
  • Security Solutions: The most important of the plugins are the security solutions. Continuous scanning of the file system and db for anomalies. Automatic IP-blocking. This is the one that I really wouldn't have any ready-made solution for.
  • All the Publishing Considerations: WordPress is deep out-of-the-box in how it handles post publishing. Managing the SEO footprint of an article is easy. Categories are built-in and verbose.

Conlcusion

I'm not converting my stuff to WordPress. I love my codebase, and would love to end up with a WordPress alternative. It's on the list of things for me to do to go through and pilfer the best parts of WordPress and integrate them into my framework. We'll see. There's other stuff on the list though.

I the People I Work With

And that's worth a ton...
